These innovations are called general technology (GPTs) and are “deep new ideas or new technologies that can have a significant impact on many aspects of the economy.” Generic technology usually takes decades to develop, or even longer, to increase productivity. They were not well understood at first, and even after the technology was commercialized, there was a long lag in production adoption.
Integrated circuits are a good example. Transistors were first demonstrated in the early 20th century, but their widespread commercial use did not materialize until very late.
